Dear Sarah-Anne, Matt isn't going to dress up that differently from anyone else.  Most of the time he would wear jeans and a T-shirt.  At parties he would be dressed very formally in a suit.  Mexican children are dressed exactly like adults for parties.  The one exception is the Day of the Dead, which is like our Halloween.  Mexicans are very fond of dressing up like skeletons with big sombreros, fancy black jackets and pants decorated with silver.  Google The Day of the Dead and I'll bet you will come up with lots of pictures and ideas.  Mexicans have displays of skeletons doing almost anything, getting married, going on picnics, driving cars.  I hope this helps.

Thanks to "sgs" for asking me to write a sequel to The House of the Scorpion.  I'll be working on it next year, after I've finished my current book, The Islands of the Blessed.  These things take time...

Oh my lord! that book HAS to be one of my top three favorites of all time, the only thing keeping it from first place is that every time I have read it I have wanted more, the knowledge of an upcoming sequel is like a dream come true! This book in my opinion has put you above authors that have had their books turned into movies, and a House of the Scorpion movie would be epic in all proportions. I am ecstatic to hear more about this subject and can't wait to see where this series is heading, the outlook looks bright!

I am thrilled to hear that you are writing a sequel to The House of the Scorpion. I enjoyed the book so much - I lent it to my grandfather and my mom. And then I promptly read it again once they were through. Thanks so much - I have read 4 of your books. My mom and I really enjoyed The trolls series as well and she is super excited about the third. Thanks- Casey
P.S. Do you have a working title to the sequel of House of Scorpions?

I just wanted to say that we are reading The House of Scorpion in my English class. It has sparked up a lot of debate. Just yesterday, I had finished reading it, and it almost made me cry. I love how you start your each of your chapters and how you end it. I loved the ending of the book, and this is the first book that has ever brought me so close to tears at the end. I also love the plot overall. I love everything about the book. Imagine my surprise when I discovered you were also the author of The Sea of Trolls, which is another of my all time favorite, and also that you were the author of A Girl Named Disaster, which we read last year.

I admire you a lot. You are just simple an amazing author, and I just wanted to say that. Thank you for writing.

Dear Mrs. Farmer,

I have recently read your novel, The House of the Scorpion. I absolutely loved it. The way you wrote your story really put me in Matt’s shoes and let me feel the hatred of the Alcarans, but also the love of Maria, Celia, and Tam Lin. I also enjoyed how you showed the reader how Matt evolved from boy to man. I thought Matt got out of hardship once he escaped from Opium but the Keeper’s got their hands on him and he became a Lost Boy. I disliked the part when Tam Lin died, he was my favorite character. I was very saddened by it but knew that he led a very hard and troubled life. I enjoyed your use of repetition with El Patron’s story about his childhood, and I too, knew it by heart at the end of the story. It was a very fascinating novel and I loved every word of it.

Your fan,
Hunter

I discovered your work in 1994 and was thrilled to find a YA novel that encompassed so many engaging and complex ideas simultaneously. I thoroughly enjoyed House of the Scorpion, and would love a sequel someday. Now, to put it on my daughter's reading shelf....

You're writing a Sequel!!!!!!!!!
I just finished it last night at 4AM. I couldn't put it down, I kept telling my self "I'll put it down after this happens" or "after that happens". I just had to finish it.

I also read The Eye, The Ear, and The Arm. That is what made me pick up Scorpion. That, and the fact that I needed something to read over the Break.

After I finished reading it, I look all over the Cover and flaps looking to see if it said "Other Books by Nancy Farmer" and saying the Sequel. I didn't see it, so I went to sleep in deep anger.
And then I googled and googled and Googled to see if you are making a sequel. I wanted to know what Matt did as Supreme Ruler of Opium, to know what happens between Maria and Matt, & Maria's reaction to the death of the Alacran's and her sisters and Father. To see how the rest of the futuristic world reacts to having a 14 year old being the most powerful boy/man in the world and that he is going to give all that up to do the right thing and give back all the land to the USA.
To know how Matt is going to "free" the eejits and reunite them with the Lost Kids.

So many thoughts left.
I'm Also excited about the TETETA Movie! With Will smith as the Arm. That would be AWESOME. You'd get a HUGE Box-office quota. You'd get so many watchers, that Production Companies would be Angry at YOU!
I would also love it if Scorpion was made into a MOVIE! You'd get the Same result! I just really hate it that the people who wanted to make it in to a movie wanted ALL rights to it. That is just stupid. Will Smith could play El Patron!!!

I Have a Question. What Happened to Edourdo from the beginning? Would Matt ever thank him? Was Edourdo an Eejit?

God gave you a gift, Ma'am. And a gift that every one loves!

Mrs Farmer,

Our teacher required us to buy the book for our Home Reading Report. and I say that this is the best HRR book I've ever read. This was not boring like the other book we were required to read. This was different because this is so exciting, full of interesting ideas.

While reading the book, I imagine or rather put myself in Matt's place. I envy Matt for having such loyal and caring friends. The bond between Matt and Chacho in the boneyard.

Matt and Maria were so sweet. hte lines: Matt:"I love you",Maria:"i Love you too and I'll probably go to hell for it" and Matt says " If i have a soul I'll go with you there".

I really loved the book and almost cried after reading it as all the scenes and chapters flashed through me. almost cried at the ending. I would be looking forward for the sequel because i want to know what will happen next. I would surely buy it when it's available in bookstores. right now, I am planning to buy "The Sea of Trolls" or another book that received a Newbery Honor.
Hope the sequel comes out soon.

It was really great to be able to read books by the three-time newbery honor author.

You have a great mind to be able to write these books. what a great author you are.

I hope more people would be able to read your books.

WOW!!! I CAN't WAIT!!! I've read "The House of the Scorpion" 4 times. At school they asked what my favorite book was and I said "The House of the Scorpion" One of my favorite characters was Tam Lin. Maybe in the sequel you could bring him back like.. He didn't REALLY die but he passed out or something and for some reason when they checked his pulse he didn't have one.

-DeathCail

P.S. I know you don't have any control over making a movie but if you did make a movie of this book, I would see it the first day and buy it the first day it came out. Too bad I'm not mexican or else I'd ask if I could be in the movie. Hehe.

Dear Mrs. Farmer,

I've had a lasting love for House of the Scorpion since its release. I'm applying to art school, and the portfolio requirement was to visually develop all aspects of an existing story. Since last summer, I've been designing as much of House of the Scorpion as I can. I sent the portfolio last week. Hopefully the inspiration I gained from the book will get me into college.

I wish I could have had your input throughout the process, but at least I can share it with you now! After several months of work, the finished portfolio is on my blog.

Part One (Characters, Environments): http://pseudocognition.blogspot.com/2009/02/portfolio-batch-uno.html
Part Two (Vehicles, Props): http://pseudocognition.blogspot.com/2009/02/portfolio-batch-dos.html

Hi there! I LOVED (Yes, it deserved a hit on the capslock button)House of the Scorpion. I love to read, but that was the first book I've gotten into so much in a long time. My mom had to take the book out of my hands because I was reading during dinner! Anyway, unlike a lot of people who have written, I didn't think the ending was sad, actually, it was beautiful. And I loved the way that Matt wasn't the "hero" who has sworn to fight all evil, he loved El Patron, as anyone that in debt to him would, and he made mistakes by being so like him. It was greatly realistic in that way. I can't wait for a sequel!!!

Hello Mrs. Farmer!

I read this book last night (like a lot of other people, I was surprised to find) and was considering it for my unofficial list of favorite books until the very end. It almost seemed to me like you went over your page quota or something right after Matt escaped to the Convent. The end was so rushed in comparison to the care and perfection in the rest of the book- I felt like it should have been about 200 pages longer, I had so many questions.
A sequel would be absolutely the best thing ever! I actually looked you up to send you a letter begging for one. It's funny how those things work. So, I am waiting impatiently, along with thousands of people who read House of the Scorpion.
Sincerely, your newest fan.

Hello Mrs. Farmer,
I first read your book, The House of the Scorpion, in the 8th grade. It was a reading assignment for Battle of the Books. I read the book and loved it. It was my first Science-Fiction novel. I just love all the detail and hidden details that you put into the book. I am now in the 10th grade, and have read it over 7 times. I can continue to re-read it continuously. I just finished reading it for the 8th time, and thought, I am going to mail her. I just want to say that I love your book, and now I am going to check out your other books. I would love to have a signed copy of the book, as it is my favorite. Thank You. Steven Lindquist.

Hi,
Ms. Farmer:

As a fellow writer, all be it a young one, I can appreciate good literature. Your writing is just so fantastic that I can't wait for a second book to the series.

I'm a sucker for romance and found the book left off just before Matt and Maria could get together. I hope they do.

I understand that how long it can take an author to write a book and as C.S. Louis once said, or at least something along the lines of what C.S. Louis once said: he knew when a story had run it's course. It was as if a tap had been turned off in his head.

I beg that that does not happen to you before at least this series is finished, however many more books you will write.

YOu have great tallent. I hope Simon and Shuster Audio haven't abridged the audio. I had to listen to it as I am blind, ... If it was abridged, I am going out and buying the Braille book.

I got this book as a present from my high school earlier this year, and I kid you not I just finished it less than an hour ago. It took me two days or so, but it was worth the read.

You have tallent.

Regards,
Alex,

Dear Ms. Farmer,

First of all, I want to say how much a love your writing. I have read The Sea of Trolls and The Land of the Silver Apples and have preordered The Islands of the Blessed. Even though those books were awesome, I fell in love with The House of the Scorpion. Hands down, it is my favorite book. I have read it over ten times and can’t wait for the sequel, God’s Ashtray. I hope you continue to write about Matt and Maria, as that was my favorite part. I have been waiting for this sequel for 5 years. Take your time on it and good luck with it! I can’t wait!

Hi Nancy. Im 16 and not really a big reader but when I was reading this book I couldn't put it down. I didn't want it to end, I wanted it to keep going. I really hope you write a sequel. I was thinking you could have Mr. MacGregor be a bigger part cause he was kinda the #2 Druglord. He might want to take over El Patron's land. This book was years 0-14 the next one could be 14-whatever... and you could make more than one. Each book could progress through Matt's life a little more. I really enjoyed reading your book.

Truthfully,
when I saw this book a few years back I thought it sounded really lame and looked funky. But now I realized that all those book reports done by my classmates consisted of "I thought this book was really great and everyone should read it.... because it's great. It's about a boy named Matt and.... well, it's great."

So, haha, it didn't really interest me. I've always thought about picking it up to read it but being my lazy, forgetful self I never did.
Then I found the book in my collection of books and I was really confused, wondering where it came from. It says its from one of my old schools but I have no memory of borrowing or taking it! (maybe it fell into my bag or a friend came over with it?)

Anyways, I thought it was amazing :)
You're really able to convey emotions through words, which I'm trying to do myself as I write little scenes that pop into my head.

My cousin and I are trying to write a story together as we have been for the past several years and I tend to read a lot of books, researching on different ways to write and convey messages.

Your book was a really good inspiration, my fingers a tingling for me to hurry and type!

Urgh, well, I can't work on any stories now because, ahem, I'm supposed to be cleaning my room right now ㅋㅋㅋ

Don't stress yourself with writing such good books! (lol)

Before I write anything else, I'd just like to say...
This book is epic!

I found this book on accident at the library. I stole it from my friend before he could read it, and I'm so glad I did!

I love how you ---Mrs. Farmer--- intertwined the plot with some romance. It made the book as spicy and the Aztlan salsa.
At times--in the beginning of the book-- I got mad at Matt for being so mean to Maria, and at Maria for forgiving Tom for every mean thing he did. I also got mad at the Alacrans for treating Matt like an animal, and El Patron raising Matt just for his organs...but later on I realized all those parts just made the book alot better!

And I'm really happy theres a sequel, but I hope it comes out soon (I know it'll take a while, though). The movie...yes! Movie! I want a movie! But sequel first, then movie, then movie for sequel :)

More:

Unlike some, I think Maria and Matt--as much as I love them together-- shouldn't get married.
I mean....really! It wouldn't fit with Maria's personality (in my opinion), I know she loves Matt, but I just don't think she would MARRY him.
Although I definitely would *love* some more romance. between them.

Suggestion:

Mrs. Farmer, I'm pretty certain you would have done this anyway, but I would really like to see alot of the Lost Boys in the sequel. And I'd like Matt to tell them who he really is....I hate it that they think he's some sort of zombie kid.

This is the best book I've EVER read. I don't usually like Science Fiction, but this was incredible!

I've read this book about five times, and by now I've put in a bunch of little bookmarks at all the best parts (well, ALL the parts were awesome, ---honestly!--- but the bookmarks were at the best ones) The best parts included:

---Matt's first meeting with the Alacrans, when Emilia, Steven and Maria bring him into the mansion, only to find out he was a "filthy clone" .

----Matt's first trip with Tam Lin to the hidden oasis.

----Celia's awesome cleverness when she feeds Matt foxglove so El Patron won't take his heart.

---Maria's attempt to escape with Matt in the hovercar, and the little red scorpion Matt used to open the tunnel. (I have to admit, that part is genius, using the fact Matt has the same DNA as El Patron to his advantage)
----Tam Lin's supposed betrayal.

....And so much more

I even started to write The House of the Scorpion novel, except with Maria's point of view. I decided on Maria because she's my favorite character besides Matt.
I could email it to you, Mrs.Farmer, when I'm done.

Alright, I'll finish this comment now, but I have to say this is now the #1 on my list of favorite book!

Forgot a few things....
(Yes, I know, my first comment was long enough but it needs to be said, at least I think so)

I just read the Q&A, and I saw the sequel may be called God's Ashtray.
I hope no one's offended or anything but I don't think it'd be a suitable title. I mean, having "God" in the title may not make it sound appealing for non-religious people or people of other religions. But who knows? It could (make that a probably) turn out to be totally suitable.

And by the way I'm 13 years old , just felt like throwing that out there.
Also, I'm a perfectionist, usually so I'm just gonna correct a typo in my last comment:

" I love how you ---Mrs. Farmer--- intertwined the plot with some romance. It made the book as spicy and the Aztlan salsa."
It's supposed to be "as" instead of "and".

Ok, that's my two cents :)

now that i've got my point across i'd like to ask a question.

well two questions...
well, actually two questions related to each other.

Did El Patron's (heh, don't know the alt codes or whatever for the accents) other clones--well, the first seven--
grow up exactly as Matt did?
I mean, where they each taken care of by Celia or someone different? And did all the Alacrans (well obviously not people like Maria who havnt been alive long enough to have seen the OTHER clones) know about them and had known the clones' fate from the very beginning??

Well I forget my second question but i'll post it if I remember.

Ooops...haha, I just commented...er.. wrote my name in the name spot and accidentally pressed enter. Sorry.

But what I wanted to say is:

4 years ago (I'm 13) I was at the bookstore Chapters and I was looking around and I saw the book "The Ear, the Eye and the Arm" and I picked it up, bought it and read it. It was really good.
And back then, I never payed attention to the author's name.

And last year I read "The House of the Scorpion", but I never made the connection between the two books.

It was only until I saw this website and found out that it was you who had written "The Ear, the Eye and the Arm". I was totally amazed.
"The Ear, the Eye and the Arm" was the best book of my one-digit age years and Scorpion is the best so far of my two-digit age years.
Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe you're just an AWESOME AUTHOR.

By the way, I can't wait for Scorpion sequel! I really want more Matt, Maria, Lost Boys, etc. Will the publishers limit how many pages the sequel can be, too? I sure hope not!

Yeah, this is the same person who wrote about 2 weeks earlier and I'd just like to say...something.

Well, I REALLY dont want it to seem like I'm telling you how to write and that stuff, but I'd have to agree with some earlier commenters (wow, that's not even a word!) about the title God's Ashtray.

My parents are deeply unreligious ( i mean, they aren't against God and such, but just ARENT religious) and they'd certainly not let me read anything God/religion- related.

I'd still DEFINITELY want to read it, but wouldn't be able to. So I was wondering if maybe the title can be changed?

Well, I'm not asking you to to change the title for the sequel just because of myself and some other people. But I'd really appreciate it if you could maybe consider it?

Dear nancy, i know you are realy busy, doind whatever you do, but i thought i mi9ght as well let u know, i love your books. especially house of the scorpion.the character design, and how you molded them throughout their lives, the setting, in a large "plantation", where matt grows up, and how you close up the end of the story. it inspired me so much, i decided to write my own book. so, even though you may never even respond, good luck with all your books,i hope they are all hits. Your my hero nancy, so keep it up.

I love this book!
I really, really do!
It kicks so much butt it's not even funny! (and this book IS funny).

This beats every book I've ever read.
Good freakin' job on The House of the Scorpion!

THERE

Got all my complementing (hopefully) out of the way. Now I can say what I mean to say:

It's about the sequel. I'm not gonna peeve you off my asking when it's gonna be published; I've written a few books myself (not published, of course) but I know they take time.
ANYWAYS, QUESTION/WHATEVER:

I was wondering if you could consider NOT making the title "God's Ashtray".
My parents are really quite messed up. They are literally the "judge a book by it's cover" type. They wouldn't let me read anything with "God" in the title. If I did they'd say something like "I don't want you reading this Christian crap!"
(No, I'm serious.)
Even if it isn't "Christian crap" my parents would think it was and not bother to read the back then take the book away. I know. Crazy. They've done this before.
I mean, my family's freakin' Jewish (yes, those stereotyped dorks who light candles and play with dreidels. sorry, but that's really how I view my religion) and they hardly let me read anything religious!

WOW.
I think I went too overboard here. I just meant to ask you to consider changing the title. But I'm not erasing this stuff now. I've spent ten minutes on this comment.
So could you please consider changing the title? Please respond!

By the way good luck with the sequel!

I have request that may be tooo much... but could you please call it the rise of Matt with a large red scorpion on the cover?I ask of this becouse you have Matt(eo) Alacran coming in being a clone people who hate him are dead... its his time to rise up reveal himself to the world and take charge! So i really believe it would suit the book. But in the end of course its your choice...Before I read this book I myself started writing a book in 6th grade and I kind of gave up hope at the 9th chapter... then I stumbled on your book 7 months later and I was re inspired! Your book was absolutely amazing it was as though god himself sent me an angel in the form of a book!!! It was an amazing book and I hope you have more GREAT suprises for the next book. When I fineshed and learned that there wasnt a sequel I felt devestated! just like I felt after finishing the Harry Potter trilogy... I thought I would go crazy waiting but i learned she isnt making more so i stoped waiting... resently i read A new series and there next book is coming out in May!! Man I wrote a lot...

I want to be a writer and have been trying to write some books but its really hard and i can see how much work, effort and wit this book would take to write. Right when I finished it I immediately checked to see if there would be a sequel, I'm sooo happy there is and I can't wait to read it!!!!!!!!

The first time I read The House of the Scorpion I was in middle school, and now even after completeing my first semester of college I still consider it one of my favorite books. I have already read it cover to cover several times, and have reread my favorite chapters on countless occasions. No matter how much I have grown up and changed after first picking the book up I still feel like I can relate to Matt's story in more ways than one. This book has actually become so close to me that I have considered getting 'Property of the Alacran Estate' tatooed on my foot. Although this may be very extreme it is an idea I have been throwing around for 2 years.

Thank you for writing such a beautiful book. I am very excited to hear that you are working on a sequel and cannot wait to find out what happens to all of the characters I have grown to love so much.

The first time I read The House of the Scorpion I was in 8th grade. I just recently finished my first semester at college and through all the apparently "marvelous and life changing" books which have been force fed to me by school, The House of the Scorpion, a book I bought at a scholastic fair MANY years ago, outshines them all.

I can't contain my excitement for the sequel! I hope it's ridiculously long! I love it all so much!

I know there are tons of people who either want to attempt or have attempted making sequals, and i literally cannot put into words how enthusiastic and excited i am for the sequal, and i know you probably have plans for the book and i want it to remain a suprise, but ive always thought in the sequal, while matt was tearing down opium, macgregor would be a very nice antagonist and would have proper motivation to destroy matt and esperanzas alliance. Although im not sure if he died in the last book, so pardon my ignorance if he did.

This book was great. I'm 12 and we had a poetry unit in school. I wrote a few poems about bio ethical topics and one of my poems were about cloning. My teacher read it and asked if I had read The House of the Scorpion, she was shocked I hadn't read it and told me I should. I finished it in 2 days. In that period I had the book confiscated in school 3 times. I had a couple of questions though.
1. Is there ever going to be a sequel?
2. For cloning to take place it would take the same species and the original nucleus of the embryo would need to be replaced by the modified nucleus. So theoretically(to current knowledge) a cow wouldn't work to harvest a Clone.
3. Another question about it's scientific accuracy a cloned animal would be born just like a normal baby would. why not use an actual person instead of a cow?

I ask this one things.. please don't let them ruin the story.. It's PERFECTLY fine the way it is and I would be heartbroken if the story is not stuck to...I mean the story is practically the script...Don't do what all the other authors do...have their work ruined while transitioning from book to screen... I would be so upset as would all of your other fans...Don't let them change your story...this beautifully written amazing story...

Rikin: you will eventually learn why cattle were chosen as the surrogate mother, alongside why the process is feasible as you learn more about biology and genetics. It is possible that cattle could work as the surrogate mother. Cloning only involves genetic material from a host and does not involve the manipulation of a somatic nucleus in humans, but rather, a transfer. Since eukaryotic cells would be highly similar in structure, replacement of the nucleus would simply alter its development pattern. With this in consideration, the surrogate mother could be of a different species to a reasonable extent. Your other question can be answered in that cattle are selected owing to the international community's perception and attitude towards clones: it would be near-impossible to find a human surrogate mother who was willing to carry the clone.

I really love this book. I have read it numerous times since my 6th year in grammer school and now I am a senior in highschool. today while browsing the internet I found that there will be a sequel. It is by far my favorite book. I will love to to read it especially before I am shipped off to bootcamp for the USMC august/September of 2011.

This is by far one of my favorite books! I had read it in middle school and now i am a senior in high school, and i was walking up and down the isles of my school library( i am a very VERY big bookworm)and the familiar red cover caught my eye. Only this time i didn't finish it in two days because i really wanted to read and remember every little detail. I LOVE this book and ill recommend it always! My school librarian had stopped me and told me that there doing this project where they pick out students who take out and read allot of books (surprisingly i was the one person in the whole school who was constantly in there finding a good book to read) and asked me to take a picture with my favorite book so they could hang it up in the library and all around school.I picked the house of the scorpion! I love your books and i absolutely can NOT wait if you really are making a sequel and i have read the WARNER BROS. have the rights to your book and i am PRAYING they make it into a movie. =]

I have read this book soooo many times I have honestly lost count! if this was a movie would it be done in spanish? or would there just be spanish parts??? also i think gary oldman, or maybe anthony hopkins would both be really good choices for either El Patron or El Viejo

Honestly, Mrs.Farmer, I thought the House of the Scorpion was one of the greatest novels I've read! Like everybody else, I can't wait for the sequel to come out. Good-luck going through the whole writing and publishing process! I hope Ton-ton will be in the sequel. Technically he's one of my favorite characters, alongside Tam Lin, and El Patron. (Both the clone and the one that departed during the novel.)

I just wanted to say best of luck with writing the sequel. If there is any movie producer on this Earth with any trace of sense left...then you WILL get offers for that book to be made into a movie. If you don't, then it is quite evident that this world is beyond hope.

Hello,
Mrs farmer. I am Crystal and I have the The House Of The Scorpion twice so far as a matter of fact i just finished reading it for the second time a few hours ago(:

I know everyone has been bugging you about the sequel for years now; and I must say I am quite excited myself. That book takes my breath away. I am wondering if there are any new details on the sequel. I have been searching several different websites for updates as to when its coming out and the name etc.. even though I read some where on here it is to be called Gods Ash Tray I also read that a lot of people had an issue with that name. As far as I am concerned, I see no wrong in that name. Its a wonderful name for a book in my oppinon!

I am looking forward to the release of the sequel.
please if you can give any new details no matter how small, it can even be how far along you are into writing the sequel to The House Of The Scorpion. I've been going crazy trying to find out information :/.

Take care and have a blessed day/night^^

- Crystal.

I don't know if this happens to anybody else but when I read a good book I(subconsciously) out people from life into what I read and that happened a lot in this book!
