Sequel to Scorpion 04/22/2010
April 21, 2010 A LOT of people have been asking me when the sequel to Scorpion will come out. I’m writing it right now, but it takes time to do a really good job. I don’t use outlines. Every day is a surprise and even I don’t know what’s going to happen, except that I do know how the book ends. Please don’t expect anything until next year. For those who asked whether Matt and María are really in love, the answer is yes. People can fall in love at a very young age. And stay that way. I’ve been criticized for saying this – everyone is supposed to drift from one relationship to another. There are even classes to help you overcome co-dependence, sort of professional love busters. But think about it. You don’t drift from mother to mother. You don’t swap brothers and sisters. You definitely don’t discard children when they’re annoying or send your dog to the pound because you want a new one. Love is something you don’t have to analyze. It just happens and when it’s good it’s permanent. And now, for Alicia Bloyd and the students at Illini Bluffs Middle School: The sequel is being created. I don’t like to reveal a story in advance, but I can tell you that both Aztlán and the United States want to invade Opium. And that the drug smugglers worship a saint called Jesús Malverde. Jesús Malverde really exists. Look him up on the internet. They also pray to Santissima Muerte, Most Holy Death, to protect their shipments of cocaine and heroin. If you ever wondered how crazy drug dealers are, here is the proof. We are looking for a house to buy either in the Chiricahua Mountains of Arizona or on the north coast of California. I want a really big place so friends can visit and we can unpack our huge library. Also, I want a greenhouse, an outdoor sauna, chickens, a cat and a border collie. I love the psychotic look border collies get in their eyes when they herd sheep. If we live on the coast I’ll get a Siberian Forest Cat because they have three coats of fur in different lengths and never get cold. You can dip a Forest Cat into a lake (if you have strong hands) and shake the water right off. Commentsmelonie 04/22/2010 14:32

I would like to wish you luck with the sequal for the House of the Scorpion, though I still need to read the first book. I hope you also sereously consider your writing of the Sea of Trolls series (I also hope you are not annoyed by this since so many other people keep asking) and keep hope that The Islands of the Blessed becomes more popular.

Hi I'm from Mrs. Bloyd's 7th grade class at Illini Bluffs Middle School. Sorry about the blank message I accidintaly pressed enter. I thimk I speek for all of us when I say that we absolutally loved your book. I have one question for you though. I try to write books but after I get between four and five pages I get stuck and can't go any farther. After a couple of days without anything I tend to get annoyed and write a new story. i have almost five unfinished books in my bedroom that could be okay but I don't know what else to put. I guess my question is how do you get passed those points as an author to two of my favorite books? (House of the Scorpion and The Sea of Trolls) Please post an answere to me on your blog this will really help me on my short stories. Thanks so much.

Hello, my name is Shannon, as you can see in the "Name Field". I am yet another one of the students from Mrs. Bloyds 7th grade class here at Illini Bluffs Middle School, I am a person who enjoys to read very much, so when Mrs. Bloyd introduced our class to "The House Of The Scorpian" I was thirlled to begin a new novel. From the 1st chapter I was completely enthralled with the story, I couldn't put the book down, I had actually finished the book several weeks before it was due. I would like to thank you so much for writing this book, I also like to write, although I know I'm still a beginner at this, I have 2 stories I'm working on currently and I have so much fun writing just about anything, and I hope that my stories may be as creative and enticing as your stories. And one last thing. THANK YOU SO MUCH for replying to to post Mrs. Bloyd made for our class.

I can't wait for your next book to come out. Celia was by far my favorite character in, "The House of the Scorpion" and I hope she remains a caring and wonderful character throughout the rest of the books. I think the reason I liked her so much was because she was so motherly to Matt and treated him with respect no matter who he was. Anyway, I love your books and wish you good luck writing the next book! Thank you for writing back to our class!:)

Dear Ms Farmer, My children have grown up with me reading your stories aloud; some many times. Now that I have returned to the classroom, we read house of scorpion as the last novel of the year in 8th grade. This years class has been totally involved; every teachers dream. JR in the 2nd chapter attacked the book, punching it and saying "I need to jump in a pound him." THey have tried to finish other work faster as to read another chapter. I would love to send you the version that Lorenzo just wrote "using" his spellling words this week. You have a gift of reaching these students in a profound way. Thank you. We have had amazing discusions about cloning and laborers. These are topics of their day, and for 8th graders to start thinking about them is important as well as the decisions they will make and how will they grow. We quote Tam Lin a lot just now. Crot is part of their new vocabulary. I read Eye, Ear, Arm aloud in 6&7th. Many have read the Sea trolls for book reports. A Fan Sandra

Hello, my name, as listed in name field, is Thomas. I have read the entire sea of Trolls Series, and i have read House of scopion long ago. I really enjoyed your writing style. i myself hope to one day be a great respected author such as yourself. I have scanned your writing tips and i think i will try some of them. Yes, i do know that my grammer is not up to crack, but i am working on that. Like my friend Victor Hinz, i wish you would write a sequal to Islands of the blessed, but my reasonings are a bit obscure. I do enjoy your writing style, but the real reasons i would like a sequal include that it is an obscure part of religion. Most people do not write about Norse religion in their books, Or at least i haven't noticed a whole lot of them. Another reason is that i kinda felt like you left it hanging. There are a bunch of questions i think would be best answered in a new book. I do hope your eyes heal up to snuff. And i hope that sales for Islands of the Blessed go up. I understand what you said about how writing takes time, and i do hope you know, you are one of the better authors i have read. Most are too caught up in the details, and your book seems more caught up in the flow of the story. Your underlying themes though, they really make you think. I really enjoyed all four of your books i have read, adn i think i started The eye, the arm, and the ear. But i do not remember for sure. Thanks for reading the random ramblings of a teen.

The name is Penelope, and I simply have to state that I adore your books. Although I have only gotten on to read the Ear, the Eye,and the Arm along withe The House of the Scorpion, I admire your work. However, I have not gotten the chance to devour the pile of your books in my room with school being as demanding as it is. Although I am not, may one use the word, reckless and 'skip school' as you have, I see you as a role model to make a difference in life ((Peace Corps)) of others, but also have an impact on the imaginations of many, from young adults to adults themselves! Although I am only twelve, and the children in my class are far from interested in science fiction and your works (psh...) I must congratulate you on capturing the attention of many, especially me. My class is currently doing individual Author Study Projects, and guess who I chose!

Hello! I just wanted to say that I loved "House of the Scorpion"! I can't wait until the sequel comes out, but I'm wondering why it took so long, as the original book came out in 2002. But that is probably because you're busy and had an eye surgery. But I was wondering what would happen to Matt. Didn't the book leave off just when he was at the paradise, thinking about how he would break down the Empire of Opium? I'm anticipating!

The book was not due for a few weeks but i finished it the night i got the book. I thought it was one of the best books i had read in a while! I cant wait for the next book! I would also like to know how you can write that much, because i always get stuck after only a few pages and cannot go on. Also if i do get farther than a couple pages then the book has no plot. I didn't know where to ask questions so I just replied to the latest entry on your blog. I read your Trolls series and at first I thought you made everything up. Then I finish the book and realize ther's a appendix about what I just read and telling me where you got the informatiuon from. I gotta say, I admire you for that. It must be a lot more diffulcult writing like that.I loved the series. I'm gonna honestly say that when I finished the third book, I closed it and looked at the front and all I thought was 'It can't end' and then I cried a little. I don't want it to be over. So I going to ask: Are you going to write another series about Jack, or are you going to continue the Trolls series at all? Cause I would really appreciate it, and I can assure you that it would make a lot of people happy.I'm sorry if you've already answered that question. I'm having a little trouble navigating the website. It took me a couple minutes to get here. I'm internet challenged. Oh and I was thinking about reading some more of your books, so which are your favorite? And I also heard something about a eye surgery....? I hope that all went well. Love your writing. You're my favorite author now, and I've read a LOT of books, so thats sayin something. =)

My friends and I loved the books so much, that we wrote our own sequel. It's about 300 pages long, and we each wrote about 10 chapters. It's not as good as your books though. I read House of the Scorpion on a plane ride at age 12 from the United States to Australia, and didn't put it down for the entire flight (in fact I finished it before the plane landed, it was such an amazing read). I've read several of your other books too (the Ear the Eye and the Arm is my second favorite, I've read it SO many times), but this one is my #1 favorite. I am a huge fan and I couldn't be happier you are writing a sequel! I am into writing myself, and I have actually written a chunk of a novel on the subject of drug cartels and etc. (though not with clones!). You are my favorite author aside from JK Rowling. I began to read this book back in 7th grade. My teacher was making us do a project. Unfortunately, by the time we started reading this, we had approximately five days of school left, and she never gave us the permission to take them home. I've been hunting down this book since then, and that was back in 2008. Not until a couple days ago, I found it at the library. I read it from beginning to end in one night. It was just impossible to put the book down! It's definitely one of the most interesting and thought provoking books out there. Which reminds me. On page 265 (I believe?) it says "work is freedom, freedom is work" that reminded me of George Orwell's 1984, "freedom is slavery". This book kept me on my feet. I'm ecstatic to know there will be a sequel!

I am only 14 and can't wait till the sequel comes out. Best of luck and thank you for both, House of the Scorpion and Sea of Trolls.

Your book is truly beautiful and vivid. It inquires a believable opinion based on the future. The storyline is perfect and at some parts i felt strong for the character development. I am thrilled you are making a sequel to The house of the scorpion. I love your books and keep writing for us!!

I am truly excited and cannot wait until this book is published! Though do take your time, for I do want the book to be worth the wait! And I am so thankful my previous language arts teacher introduced me to your writing, which I will be sure to read more of in the near future! I am just starting high school, but I do hope to make writing into a career one day! Both you and Scott O'Dell are my favorite writers! Keep up the good work!

Hi,Mrs. Farmer, I'm from San Diego and I'm in the 8th grade. One of the standards at my school for the 8th Grade at Pershing Middle School is to read The House of the Scorpion, and I have to say that it's awesome. Would you consider publishing the sequel sometime before the end of 2012? I want to know what happens to Opium and what happens to the characters. Would it also be possible to include a nation of exiled Americans somewhere in the northern lands (i.e. Greenland)? It would be pretty cool.

hi Mrs. Farmer, my real name isn't Zee, its Zela, weird I know (I mean what were my parents thinking?) Anyway, I'm in 8th grade and I love your book, House of the Scorpion. We read it in lit class and I was really surprised. Usually all we read are boring nonfiction novels, but yours was different!!! yay!!! Anyway, good luck on writing that sequel!

It is almost 2012, and no dice. In the end book really does not need a sequel
