April 21, 2010

A LOT  of people have been asking me when the sequel to Scorpion will come out.  I’m writing it right now, but it takes time to do a really good job.  I don’t use outlines.  Every day is a surprise and even I don’t know what’s going to happen, except that I do know how the book ends.  Please don’t expect anything until next year.  For those who asked whether Matt and María are really in love, the answer is yes.  People can fall in love at a very young age.  And stay that way.  I’ve been criticized for saying this – everyone is supposed to drift from one relationship to another.  There are even classes to help you overcome co-dependence, sort of professional love busters.

But think about it.  You don’t drift from mother to mother.  You don’t swap brothers and sisters.  You definitely don’t discard children when they’re annoying or send your dog to the pound because you want a new one.  Love is something you don’t have to analyze.  It just happens and when it’s good it’s permanent.

And now, for Alicia Bloyd and the students at Illini Bluffs Middle School:  The sequel is being created.  I don’t like to reveal a story in advance, but I can tell you that both Aztlán and the United States want to invade Opium.  And that the drug smugglers worship a saint called Jesús Malverde.  Jesús Malverde really exists.  Look him up on the internet.  They also pray to Santissima Muerte, Most Holy Death, to protect their shipments of cocaine and heroin.  If you ever wondered how crazy drug dealers are, here is the proof.

We are looking for a house to buy either in the Chiricahua Mountains of Arizona or on the north coast of California.  I want a really big place so friends can visit and we can unpack our huge library.  Also, I want a greenhouse, an outdoor sauna, chickens, a cat and a border collie.  I love the psychotic look border collies get in their eyes when they herd sheep.  If we live on the coast I’ll get a Siberian Forest Cat because they have three coats of fur in different lengths and never get cold.  You can dip a Forest Cat into a lake (if you have strong hands) and shake the water right off.

I would like to wish you luck with the sequal for the House of the Scorpion, though I still need to read the first book. I hope you also sereously consider your writing of the Sea of Trolls series (I also hope you are not annoyed by this since so many other people keep asking) and keep hope that The Islands of the Blessed becomes more popular.
Good luck once more and God bless

Hi I'm from Mrs. Bloyd's 7th grade class at Illini Bluffs Middle School. Sorry about the blank message I accidintaly pressed enter. I thimk I speek for all of us when I say that we absolutally loved your book. I have one question for you though. I try to write books but after I get between four and five pages I get stuck and can't go any farther. After a couple of days without anything I tend to get annoyed and write a new story. i have almost five unfinished books in my bedroom that could be okay but I don't know what else to put. I guess my question is how do you get passed those points as an author to two of my favorite books? (House of the Scorpion and The Sea of Trolls) Please post an answere to me on your blog this will really help me on my short stories. Thanks so much.

Hello, my name is Shannon, as you can see in the "Name Field". I am yet another one of the students from Mrs. Bloyds 7th grade class here at Illini Bluffs Middle School, I am a person who enjoys to read very much, so when Mrs. Bloyd introduced our class to "The House Of The Scorpian" I was thirlled to begin a new novel. From the 1st chapter I was completely enthralled with the story, I couldn't put the book down, I had actually finished the book several weeks before it was due. I would like to thank you so much for writing this book, I also like to write, although I know I'm still a beginner at this, I have 2 stories I'm working on currently and I have so much fun writing just about anything, and I hope that my stories may be as creative and enticing as your stories. And one last thing. THANK YOU SO MUCH for replying to to post Mrs. Bloyd made for our class.

Dear Mrs. Nancy,
last night I finished your book, "The House of the Scorpion" for, at least, the 14th time. After reading it again I thought it was time I thanked you for such a wonderful book. I remember, I was probably 12 or 13 when I first bought it. I got it out of one of those Scholastic Books catalogs we get in grade school.
I read that short outline next to the picture and thought, "Ooo this sounds pretty good." I have to say, that was quite an understatement! Ever since I first read this book I have read it at least twice a year. I even took it on a trip to Mexico in case I got bored. Turns out it didn't help much seeing as I found myself with lots of free time & finished it within 3 days. Even after so many times, this book doesn't lose its' excitement. Even though I know every single detail I find myself reacting as if it were the first time I was reading it. I admit it, I teared up at some parts the first time, and I still do. I felt embarrassed for Matt when he demands a birthday kiss, and I still do. It's just- SUCH a good book! That's all I can say and I can only hope you understand how much meaning there is behind it. And I honestly would like to give you a "This book changed my life" kind of story, but honestly, I don't know if it has. I mean after 14 times I'm SURE it has, even if only in small ways, but God knows I probably haven't noticed. But I CAN say that I am ever so glad that my young tween self picked out this book. This now 20-year old college girl is amazingly happy and proud to have this book on her shelf. It will definitely stay in my Top 5 forever. There is so much more I want to say here, but perhaps another time. :) Thank you so much for your hard work and amazing talent.
Vanesa

P.S.- All these 7th graders make me feel old! :O

I can't wait for your next book to come out. Celia was by far my favorite character in, "The House of the Scorpion" and I hope she remains a caring and wonderful character throughout the rest of the books. I think the reason I liked her so much was because she was so motherly to Matt and treated him with respect no matter who he was. Anyway, I love your books and wish you good luck writing the next book! Thank you for writing back to our class!:)

Ms. Farmer,
I really enjoyed your book "The House of the Scorpion" so much. It was very interesting from the begining to the end and probably one of my favorite books. My teacher Mrs. Bloyd which sent you a message made us stop throughout the book to answer some questions. She made us slow down on the book so we wouldn't read the book fast and miss something important. My classmates also liked the book. My favorite part was when Matt and Chacho got thrown in the boneyard, and you didn't know if they would make it out. I just wanted to say I enjoyed your book and want to read more of your books, and thank you very much for writing back to our class, it meant so much to all the students and most of all Mrs. Bloyd.

Dear Nancy Farmer,
I attend Illini Bluffs Middle School.I really enjoyed reading "The House of the Scorpion." My favorite character in your book was Ton-Ton! Ton-ton was a hero to me. He wasn't the smartest but he knew what he was doing and wanted to help Matt and Chacho. Toward the end of the book he became a hero by saving Matt and Chacho out of the whale bones with a claw and had them go in the shrimp harvester. That really made me think a little bit because I didnt think that he would do something like that. It gives kids like me hope that anything is possible!

Dear Ms Farmer, My children have grown up with me reading your stories aloud; some many times. Now that I have returned to the classroom, we read house of scorpion as the last novel of the year in 8th grade. This years class has been totally involved; every teachers dream. JR in the 2nd chapter attacked the book, punching it and saying "I need to jump in a pound him." THey have tried to finish other work faster as to read another chapter. I would love to send you the version that Lorenzo just wrote "using" his spellling words this week. You have a gift of reaching these students in a profound way. Thank you. We have had amazing discusions about cloning and laborers. These are topics of their day, and for 8th graders to start thinking about them is important as well as the decisions they will make and how will they grow. We quote Tam Lin a lot just now. Crot is part of their new vocabulary. I read Eye, Ear, Arm aloud in 6&7th. Many have read the Sea trolls for book reports. A Fan Sandra

Hello, my name, as listed in name field, is Thomas. I have read the entire sea of Trolls Series, and i have read House of scopion long ago. I really enjoyed your writing style. i myself hope to one day be a great respected author such as yourself. I have scanned your writing tips and i think i will try some of them. Yes, i do know that my grammer is not up to crack, but i am working on that. Like my friend Victor Hinz, i wish you would write a sequal to Islands of the blessed, but my reasonings are a bit obscure. I do enjoy your writing style, but the real reasons i would like a sequal include that it is an obscure part of religion. Most people do not write about Norse religion in their books, Or at least i haven't noticed a whole lot of them. Another reason is that i kinda felt like you left it hanging. There are a bunch of questions i think would be best answered in a new book. I do hope your eyes heal up to snuff. And i hope that sales for Islands of the Blessed go up. I understand what you said about how writing takes time, and i do hope you know, you are one of the better authors i have read. Most are too caught up in the details, and your book seems more caught up in the flow of the story. Your underlying themes though, they really make you think. I really enjoyed all four of your books i have read, adn i think i started The eye, the arm, and the ear. But i do not remember for sure. Thanks for reading the random ramblings of a teen.

Nancy,
I am a freelance writer working on an article for VOYA-Voice of Youth Advocates on the punks of science fiction. Because your book, House of the Scorpion, is biopunk at its best, I was hoping that I might interest you in interviewing with me for the article. The article will cover the many "Punks of Science Fiction" and I would very much like to include your input on the success of the biopunk subgenre and why you decided to write House of Scorpion. VOYA has over 7000 subscribers who are young adult librarians and school library media specialists. If you are interested in interviewing for the article, we can do it at your convenience either over the telephone or via email.

As a freelance writer, I write on education, literacy and library issues and have been published in School Family Media's web magazine, the American Library Association's magazine, Book Links, VOYA-Voice of Youth Advocates, the National Middle School Association's magazine, Middle Ground and other publications. Dear Mrs. Farmer;
The class read The House of the Scorpion and quickly became interested because of the surprise opening; however, they were extremely disappointed with the ending. Now, I realize you may have been planning on a sequel, but they wanted some type of "wrap up" or "turn of events" as a payoff for having read that looooonnnnng, 380 page book.

They were very happy to hear that there will be a sequel, but honestly, I do not believe many of them will purchase it when it comes out.I am typing this for them but they hope you will see this as constructive criticism.

We look forward to hearing from you on this blog. We will be checking for a response everyday.

I've always loved your books from the age of twelve and even now at 19. I've been reading about how your working on the House of the Scorpion sequel ( which I am super excited about). But I read about the Hollywood deals you have been getting for your books and well- I would just like to tell you about how Hollywood tends to ruin my favorite things.

This is simply out of concern, because Hollywood has recently made a film out of a children's show I used to watch. This show called "Avatar the last air bender" featured Asian culture and all the characters were Asian, and what ended up happening was that all the characters were cast as Caucasian. When fans got angry about this the studio switched all the villains for south Asian actors.

Your books were pretty much the only books I had read that showed kids from all the different corners of the world I found it wonderful and as a young Indo-Canadian it was eye opening. Your books made me feel a lot less like an outsider. As a kid, many of my schoolmates would bother me about my background and I never felt like I could be understood as an equal by them. Your books made me realize that some one who looked like me could also be a hero. For a child that is a world of a difference.
Thank you for being there during my childhood and teen years, you helped a lot.

I would hate to see characters that inspired me, and characters that I have fallen in love with suffer the same fate as the characters of "Last air bender"

Sincerely,
Jaspreet

The name is Penelope, and I simply have to state that I adore your books. Although I have only gotten on to read the Ear, the Eye,and the Arm along withe The House of the Scorpion, I admire your work. However, I have not gotten the chance to devour the pile of your books in my room with school being as demanding as it is. Although I am not, may one use the word, reckless and 'skip school' as you have, I see you as a role model to make a difference in life ((Peace Corps)) of others, but also have an impact on the imaginations of many, from young adults to adults themselves! Although I am only twelve, and the children in my class are far from interested in science fiction and your works (psh...) I must congratulate you on capturing the attention of many, especially me. My class is currently doing individual Author Study Projects, and guess who I chose!
You...
I am to write a letter to you as part of the assignment, whether or not I send it is up to me, however, I would like to be able to send it to you, and I will indeed make sure it is in a large font to compensate for the eye surgery (feel better!) so, how may I contact you other than through your blog?
Well, I hope you get to reading this, I really do...

Hello! I just wanted to say that I loved "House of the Scorpion"! I can't wait until the sequel comes out, but I'm wondering why it took so long, as the original book came out in 2002. But that is probably because you're busy and had an eye surgery. But I was wondering what would happen to Matt. Didn't the book leave off just when he was at the paradise, thinking about how he would break down the Empire of Opium? I'm anticipating!

I would also like to know how you can write that much, because i always get stuck after only a few pages and cannot go on. Also if i do get farther than a couple pages then the book has no plot. Hello,

First, I wanted to ask how are you doing since your eye operation? i will add you to my prayer list.

Next, the three awards on the cover of The House of Scorpion caught my attention as I was browsing in Barnes & Noble bookstore. I picked it up Friday and finished it on Sunday. i then passed it on to one of my students who enthralled by the cover. I cannot wait to hear her reaction.

By the way, it's funny how I remember seeing your book Ear....., many years ago, but I never picked it up. ( I must admit it was the cover.) However, now that I have The House....I enjoy your style and want to see if that smooth, natural, flow is evident in your other novels.

Lastly, I am delighted to learn that you are writing a sequel to The House....I look forward to seeing what Matt will do with his new power. P.S. I think it would make an outstanding movie. Speilberg would probably do it the best or even the man who did Avatar. That movie was ahead of its time and, I think it's James Cameron, had the idea years ago and it just came to fruition. Technology issues.

Anyway, if it's meant to be, it will happen. Take care, and may God bless your imagination.

I dearly, DEARLY, hope fat (or pray grants, as your religious preference may vary) that Islands of the Blessed is not the last book in the Sea of Trolls series. Theres such rich reading in this, I recommend Sea of Trolls to EVERYONE I meet, literally.

Don't want to take too much of your time so won't ramble with my 'proofs'.
Reading your Sea of Trolls note about Norse ledgens might trace back to memories of Neanderthols, coupled with my doubts about the common theroy of how black people became white people since we know dark genes dominate- Darwin not withstanding, still I have a kink with the theory(after all the scientists told us that dinosaurs were slow cold bloode reptiles, to say nothing of how they ripped the first people who opened their eyes to recognize moderen birds as their decendents)I had an eppiphiny...Neanderthols were blond and blue eyed.I could go on, but running out of space. Its only convention and lack of imagination that portrays then as dark. think Yetti.

I'm gonna honestly say that when I finished the third book, I closed it and looked at the front and all I thought was 'It can't end' and then I cried a little. I don't want it to be over. So I going to ask: Are you going to write another series about Jack, or are you going to continue the Trolls series at all? Cause I would really appreciate it, and I can assure you that it would make a lot of people happy.I'm sorry if you've already answered that question. I'm having a little trouble navigating the website. It took me a couple minutes to get here. I'm internet challenged. Oh and I was thinking about reading some more of your books, so which are your favorite? And I also heard something about a eye surgery....? I hope that all went well. Love your writing. You're my favorite author now, and I've read a LOT of books, so thats sayin something. =)

I can't wait until you write the sequel to the house of the scorpion! i LOVED the first one and i hope the new one comes out soon! i think the best books you wrote were the troll series. i saw it in the library and i picked it up for my sister to read, but i started reading it and i couldn't put it down! i wish you would write a 4 trolls book! i was sooo sad when i read that the islands of the blessed was the last book! and by the way you ended it, you could deffinatly make a 4 one! it could be about jack and thorgils time at the school of bards! i am reading the ear, the eye, and the arm right now, and its reallyyyyy good! you are my favorite author and i cant wait to read more of your books :]

I agree with Sarah and the rest of the people who said you need to write a fourth Sea of Trolls book. I really enjoyed reading the first three ones and I was very upset when I learned that The Islands of the Blessed was the last book. My friends and I loved the books so much, that we wrote our own sequel. It's about 300 pages long, and we each wrote about 10 chapters. It's not as good as your books though. My friend Abby was reading The Land of Silver Apples and she noticed you name on the cover was spelled like
N A N C Y
F A R M E R
so she thought your name was fnaarnmceyr! I'm reading The Sea of Trolls for the umpteenth time and I keep getting sad because there isn't a 4 one to read! I know that it's kind of anoying for all of these people to bother you, but it's only because we love your books so much.

I agree with Sarah, Bethany and all the others about your sea of trolls. Please don't be annoyed or angry with us, we truly love your books and we want to see more. If you every get a chance and are tired for a moment of writing the house of the scropion sequal. You should show your editor this blog and how many people deeply and passinately enjoy your trolls series and all the other series as well.

Nancy,
I have just 2 comments. One, I loved hearing about your childhood and life up to now. You give girls a reason to be themsevles. I hope you are on the mend. Second, I teach students with learning disabilities, many who are dyslexic. They loved reading House of the Scorpion. They actually finished it! And they can't wait for the sequel. Thank God you exist. Stay healthy and I hope to meet you some day!

I read House of the Scorpion just about a month after it was out in stores. My teacher recommended it to me due to the fact that I was an avid reader. I finished it within a day and a half, note I was only twelve at the time. But to this day it is by far the best book I have ever read. I make sure I can read it at least once a year and now my sister is reading it so we have much to talk about.
I noticed you are writing a sequel to the book and I am very excited. Its been very difficult to find a well written book lately. I can not wait to get my hands on it, enclose myself in my dorm with a cup of coffee and read my heart away. Thank you ----Kayla Jo

OH MY GOODNESS. I can't believe you are writing a sequel! I read House of the Scorpion on a plane ride at age 12 from the United States to Australia, and didn't put it down for the entire flight (in fact I finished it before the plane landed, it was such an amazing read). I've read several of your other books too (the Ear the Eye and the Arm is my second favorite, I've read it SO many times), but this one is my #1 favorite. I am a huge fan and I couldn't be happier you are writing a sequel! I am into writing myself, and I have actually written a chunk of a novel on the subject of drug cartels and etc. (though not with clones!). You are my favorite author aside from JK Rowling. I adore your work, please never ever stop writing :)

Best,

Caroline

I began to read this book back in 7th grade. My teacher was making us do a project. Unfortunately, by the time we started reading this, we had approximately five days of school left, and she never gave us the permission to take them home. I've been hunting down this book since then, and that was back in 2008. Not until a couple days ago, I found it at the library. I read it from beginning to end in one night. It was just impossible to put the book down! It's definitely one of the most interesting and thought provoking books out there. Which reminds me. On page 265 (I believe?) it says "work is freedom, freedom is work" that reminded me of George Orwell's 1984, "freedom is slavery". This book kept me on my feet. I'm ecstatic to know there will be a sequel!

I think all those awards you won were deserved.
But, you are missing one:
The influence a young man to write, award.
Seriously, evr since I read that book in sixth grade, I've wanted to write one myself. In fact, I've been working on it for almost two years. (I've had a few technicle difficulties along the way...)
I really appreciate that book and you for writing it. I don't think that I'd have such a love for writing if you didn't.

Hi,Mrs. Farmer, I'm from San Diego and I'm in the 8th grade. One of the standards at my school for the 8th Grade at Pershing Middle School is to read The House of the Scorpion, and I have to say that it's awesome. Would you consider publishing the sequel sometime before the end of 2012? I want to know what happens to Opium and what happens to the characters. Would it also be possible to include a nation of exiled Americans somewhere in the northern lands (i.e. Greenland)? It would be pretty cool.

It was great, while every once in a while I would guess what was going to happen (without looking ahead, because that's not what you're supposed to do) and sometimes I would guess right. Like how I guessed Tam Lin died towards the end. Which was so sad! I thought he and Celia would end up together. :'/ But great books always need an unexpected death somewhere somehow.

Mrs. Farmer,
For a class assignment, our teacher had us read The House of the Scorpion. We also had study guides, vocabulary, the whole shebang! We first had to read the book. At first, I was a little scared to read the book, but now, it is one of my favorite books I have ever read! I truly cannot wait to read the sequel to The House of the Scorpion, and neither can my class! (First we have to finish the study guides and all...)
