Many of you have been asking when the book will be finished.  I can now say that I’m in the home stretch.  I will be finished in three months.  After that, it goes to the editor and publisher.  I don’t know how fast they will be, but I believe they really want this book out.  Many of your questions will be answered in the sequel – why did Tam Lin kill himself?  Was there a love story between him and Celia?  Will Matt and Maria get together again?  Will the Lost Boys move to Opium?  And how will a 14-year-old boy handle having untold wealth and power, as well as thousands of zombies, a Farm Patrol army and enemies on all his borders.  Remember that Matt doesn’t even know what lies within his own country.  There will be surprises.

I wish I could say there’s a movie planned, but so far nothing has happened.  There have been an amazing number of YouTube entries advertising it.  Many heartfelt thanks to those of you who created a YouTube about the House of the Scorpion.  I only recently became aware of them, and I am impressed with your skill.  I haven’t the slightest idea how to do a YouTube video, living as I do somewhere around the year 1950 in the Chiricahua Mountains.

For a long time I worked slowly.  There was so much else to do – packing, moving, eye operations, cooking from scratch where there are no stores or restaurants.  Provisioning took a while to learn.  What keeps and what spoils.  Keeping packrats from eating the inside of the car.  Surprises like the whole electrical system blowing up.  I learned that I have few basic skills.  Harold has more, but both of us are dummies where electrical wiring is concerned.  Putting in water pipes is another mystery.  A lot of people here have built their own houses.  They know how everything is done, but we are babies compared to them.  I can cook, clean and write novels.

Then, as I mentioned before, I rediscovered music.  I have to say that music is so enthralling that I never dared to listen to it while driving.  I have walked out of bookstores because of background music.  For me there is no such thing as background.  I couldn’t even read the book titles.  But I can write to music.  More than that, I can write like a demon.

So thanks to all of you for being so patient, for writing encouraging emails, and for making YouTube videos.  Mil gracias, amigos y amigas!

I read The House of the Scorpions as a junior in high school and I still cannot fully contain the excitement that I feel toward that book, and the upcoming sequel!

I wished there will be a Sequel to The Islands of the Blessed, im just not Satsified enough, I love the Books, I think there should be at least 4 or 5 more books to Sea of Trolls Triolgoy, maybe more, I'd Like, for jack and Thorigal/Jill to have more adventures, like Going to the Mountians where the Dwarfs live for adventures, Adventures learning to be a Bard, ect... just many more adventures.

The Ear the Eye and the Arm was an incredible story. I remember reading it in middle school and thinking it was a great story and would be an awesome movie if done right. Do you think it'll ever get made? Perhaps you could contact some African American film makers who may be interested in adapting it?

Either way, thank you for writing the novel.

I would like the idea of a movie for House of the Scorpions but personally, the movie will never be as good as the book. And I feel that the movie will just kill everything, shorten the plot, and leave out major key points. Right now, I'm immersed in your blog and would love to hear more on your development with House's sequel. Good luck and I hope to hear more from you!

When they do make a film adaption of the "House of the Scorpion", I think it should be split into two films. The book has so much detail within its 380 pages that I don't think one film would do it justice. I wonder if they were holding out making a film waiting for the next book to be released so that they could film them back to back.

The House of the Scorpion is one of my favorite books and I can't wait to read the sequel. I was so obsessed with the book back in 8th grade. It's a shame that a movie isn't being made, and I'm worried that they might never think of making one because this book was written almost a decade ago and it's not as popular as things like The Hunger Games. But maybe the sequel will bring more attention to it.

And I love the YouTube trailers for it too. People can be so inventive.

I just wanted to say that I'm so pleased to hear that there will be a sequel to HOUSE OF THE SCORPION. I finished reading it this afternoon -- I wish it were the 50 pages longer that you said it should have been! I didn't want it to end. I went online to look up more titles of yours to check out, and came across your blog, only to see that you are in fact working on a sequel. Happy writing! I can't wait until it comes out.

5/17/2012 10:28:33 am

okay im so excited! You were my favorite author i remember when sea of trolls came out and i loved you! I wanted to become an author and i even wrote a newspaper article about you! I completly forgot though because life got a little crazy but i recently purchased house of scorpion at a garage sale and remembered the writing style impressive and familiar, then i realized it was you! your still my favorite author now that i have discovered you once again! and by the way, i read the house of the scorpion in two days and its now my favorite book! :P

5/19/2012 02:39:08 pm

Don't you feel loved? (I'm not trying to sound sarcastic)

5/25/2012 08:13:02 am

What does matt look like, i think that he is a sandy blonde who is tall, and Maria with brown hair, I LOVE THE BOOK!!!!!!

5/29/2012 10:24:17 am

Hello Mrs. Farmer, i am currently reading your book House of the Scorpion and i'm quite entertained so far (i haven't finished). Funny enough, i've had your book for about three years or so and i never picked it up before. I'm glad that i finally did. Anyways, i'm hoping to be a future filmmaker and i have lots of potential (so says everybody i know and some people i don't know) anywho, i can really see "Scorpion" being a good film (if done right, of course). And i'm interested in possibly bringing it to life sometime in the future to the silver screen. Hopefully it gets to the point where we discuss rights and whatnot, but it's great to hear that a sequel is underway. Can't wait!

5/29/2012 10:29:46 am

Oh, almost forgot. I know how the whole "shortening the plot and leaving out key points" thing isn't really popular with the public. don't worry. If i made this a movie, i would stay true to the book no matter how long it is.

6/10/2012 06:04:32 am

Mrs. Farmer, i just finished reading The House of the Scorpion and at the end i was felt depressed because i didn't think there would be a sequel but now that i saw this i can't wait to know when i comes out. Hope it's as good as the first......

Hello Mrs. Farmer. I came here because I finished reading the troll series again. I have to admire that your books are amazing..

7/23/2012 10:34:02 am

Nancy I am a tremendous fan of yours, I read Scorpion first when I was about 14, nearly five years ago, however I have picked it up again and again to reread because of it's fabulous plot and your writing skills. I am so excited for this sequel, I've been wanting one since I first finished the book those five years ago! I send you all the support in the world and love from a huge fan.

Dear Mrs. Farmer,
I've enjoyed your Trolls boks very much. I bought the first two books through the Science Fiction Book Club and the third one in paperback. Thinking about your comments that the publishers aren't keen on a fourth book (even if I am), until they have made money off the first three, I wondered if the amount going to cover your advance is affected by the edition I buy. I'm not looking for dollar figures, just a rough hierarchy, like nice hardbacks generate the most cash, followed by SFBC hardbacks, then trade paperbacks and finally small, octavo paperbacks. Or maybe it is all the same.

Yoou mentioned in an earlier post that The Islands of the Blessed had been criticized for not having a high body count. If you don't like the Gotterdamerung approach, and don't think you could do it really well, don't do it! Seriously. I read the first three of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter books, all of which start off quite imaginative and interesting. However, he seems to feel that he has to end each book with this huge battle, and he doesn't do it well. Perhaps because I do logistics work for the US military, I find myself dropping into an analytical mode, and he just has no clue. Tolkien has some idea of this when he has the Rohirrim cut through the Druadan woods. I've given up on ERB, at least for the time being.
Best Wishes,
David Edgington
