I am so grateful for all the messages you have sent me and I beg all of you to be patient during this move.  It has taken longer than I expected, partly because we have so much STUFF.  There is a new book out called Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding and the Meaning of Things about how some people hoard belongings.  The habit starts out small – you just can’t bear to throw anything away – and before you know it you have tunnels leading from the bedroom to the bathroom and you have 190 cats.  I’m not that bad, but I know people who are.

If you look at the Amazon website for Stuff you will find nine pictures of a living room degenerating from tidy to horrible.  I found mine at level 4.  Sometimes it has been at level 5.  I swore to throw out all the junk and never, never to let it happen again, but it’s hard.  And it’s time-consuming.

My mother achieved level 7 and my brother-in-law got to level 9!!!  The parents of my son’s best friend have also achieved level 9.  You can lose an entire sofa in a house like that.  One of my landladies long ago had a level 8.  She asked me to hunt for her son’s pet rat and I found it squashed flat and mummified under a heap of books.  This problem is more common that people realize and I’ll bet some of you know someone with a STUFF problem.

So far I have given away 600+ books to the library, many boxes of clothes, canned food (I always expected a disaster), and much furniture.  The worst stuff was taken to the dump.  Boy, was that an eye opener!  Our landlord rented a truck, and Harold and he loaded up a collapsed armchair, a bed with a hole in the middle with metal wires sticking up, three-legged chairs, plus all the junk the other people in our apartment block had abandoned.  They drove to a warehouse where things were sorted.  The floor was covered in sticky, black goo.  The landlord was wearing boots – he knew what was coming – but Harold only had sandals.  (He rushed home to disinfect his feet.)  The warehouse smelled like rotten meat and it was full of down-and-out men.  Once the STUFF was sorted, it would be taken to a huge mountain of garbage near Half Moon Bay.  Half Moon Bay is a beautiful seaside town full of rich people and I’ll bet they don’t know about this garbage mountain.

It got me to thinking about how many  trash heaps there must be lurking near pretty towns, and also about the men who have to sift through them.  Not everyone hates that kind of work, though.  My old landlady used to love working at the dump.  She had a habit of nudging pedestrians out of her way at crosswalks with her car and was frequently sentenced to work at the dump as punishment.  It took a while for the judge to realize she liked the dump because she could bring goodies home to her three kids.  Then he sentenced her to write I WILL NOT TRY TO RUN OVER PEDESTRIANS 1,000 times.

We will probably move in about six weeks.  Thank to all of you who have given me ideas for the Scorpion sequel.  Some of them were very useful and surprising.  I have been forming the plot in my mind.  I can’t write now because the computers are in Portal.  We have this lap top, but it’s hard for me to see because the keys are black.  We bought it when my eyesight was still good.  Please be patient a little longer.  Once I start writing I will do it full time.

Hello mises Farmer.
sorry for this confusing name but my parents don't like me giving my name out on the internet. I had a question about your Sea of Trolls series(which I LOVE!!). The question is have you ever seen the movie Outlander? The reason I ask is because it's a viking movie with an interestin twist for a dragon and I wondered if, when you can get to it, you would be able to take some ideas from the movie.
I'm just asking because it looks like it has some interesting ideas.
Good luck on the move
God bless

Nancy, I don't envy you (other than the moving to Arizona part). My mother is about an 8 on that stuff scale. I find I go crazy thowing things out whenever I get back from visiting. Moving is a real hassle, but a wonderful adventure as well.

Thank you for writing The House of the Scorpion. It's my all time favorite book. I read it every time something bad happens in my life, and it has cheered me up all those times. You're the reason I write and the reason I have faith in people. Can't wait for the sequel.

I know! I just finished it for English 1 and it is really cool. It really got my brain gears turning. Not only in a scientific way, but religously as well... I am anxiously awaiting the sequel in June or July (in the March post she said it would be done in about 3 months)

My name is Joseph Letson and I am a Language Arts teacher at Lauffer Middle School in Tucson, AZ. My students have been working on a project in my class where they will be designing parks and theme parks based upon books that they have read. Two of these groups will be designing parks based upon The House of the Scorpion. The parks that will be designed should accurately represent the book's characters, setting, themes, and plot.

The students have been working in groups and after they have designed the parks, they will be required to write a formal business letter asking for permission to build it. I was hoping that you would be willing to read their letters and look at pictures of the park models once they are finished in early December. This would give them an opportunity to get feedback from an outside source that represents the best interests of the book. If you're able to help, please let me know!

Thank you for your time,
Joseph Letson

Mrs. Farmer,

Can't wait for the Scorpion sequel to be released! I'm sure it will be just as great as the first one. As far as the movie goes, it would be interesting if you were to write a screenplay adapted from the book. I'm actually considering adapting it myself once I get the time. I wouldn't do anything with it for obvious reasons, but it would be great to get your feedback on it. Also, I work in the film industry and would love to make it into a film. Obviously keeping you in total creative control. Maybe in the future something can be worked out to make that happen. Anyways, thanks for such a great read. House of the Scorpion will indefinitely be one of my favorites, if not my favorite.

11/28/2010 12:27:13 pm

dear mrs. farmer
i really like your books. my favorite parts were when matt was living with the keepers and the ideas on working and living they had versus matt. i also like the controversy on clones and whether they have souls. i am really looking forward to your next book.
also this may sound personal, but on your biography you married your husband 2 weeks later. is that true?

Hi! I read House of the scorpion for English class. I just finished it yesterday and I loved it! I can't wait for the sequel. I have one question though. Which characters died? Did Benito and Senetor Mendoza die? And did Matt see their dead bodies at the end?

Thx ;)

hello my name is michael im in 8th grade i just wanted to tell u how much i love your book i have read it 4 times i am jittering with joy that you are making a seguel

12/20/2010 08:43:50 am

Hi I have a suggestion for the sequel. I know your first books are all about Arfrica, and The Ear, the eye and the arm is in the not so distant future which is when the House of Scorpian is set, so why not go back to your roots and have some Arfircan drug dealer whose main import is selling opium and El Patron was their main source and they are unable to grow the poppies in their native land and incorperate Arfircan aspects into your book. I know you probably already have a plot in your mind so maybe in a sequel or a unrelated book in the not so distant future?

Hey nancy I have to say that I was so moved by house of the scorpion that I have cried several times when I finished the book. I have read the book a total of eleven times and each time I learn more of the story and understand it. I hope you get around to the sequal when you get the chance. I am fifteen years old and I am not an emotional person but you made me feel as if I was looking directly through matts eyes. I typically am the kind of guy heavily into music. I like matt also play guitar and piano and have played both since I was eight. I think that this has motivated me to go on with lifer and not end it like I have considered so many times. This book is and always will be my favorite book. Thank you for this book. Ps, could I get an update on how the sequal is coming along. Thanks,

I loved house of the scorpion as many do when/ if the second is made or released it would be cool if it starts out were it left if or just have a prolouge

1/8/2011 01:22:21 pm

Hi! I am a big fan of House of Scorpion. Thank you for such an awesome book and I am waiting excitedly for the next part. But I am writing you as a beginning writer. I am getting ready to release my first book very soon and was wondering how you went about marketing your first children's book. Everyone has to start somewhere and the process of birthing thoughts and words into life is very painful and strenuous. This said it is a little easier when there is an experienced person there to help through those labor pains. Again, I thank you for such great books. I am a huge fan!

1/10/2011 07:16:20 am

Just wondering the progress of the move/book. I also think House of the Scorpion wouldve been cool in a movie but not as good as the book. No Doubt
THE HOUSE OF THE SCORPIONS was the best book ever written.

I absolutely adore all the books of yours I've read (Trolls trilogy and House of the Scorpion), and I'm sure the others are absolutely gobsmacking as well. As for a Scorpion sequel, well, I think it's a positively spanking idea and really couldn't support you more. I love all the debating and theorizing about clones in Scorpion, and it was all the more eerie simply because there'd be nothing improbably about it if our technology was more advanced. That thought, I admit, does unhand me a bit. Anyway, I love you writing, I love your books, which I find hilarious, especially Trolls ("Brutus rolled on the ground, passing gas noisily."[Yes, that's more of a paraphrase.] Priceless, though.), and your lovable character (ex. BRUTUS!).
Good luck with the move and the ever foreboding STUFF!

Roonil (again)
1/12/2011 11:01:45 am

I meant 'improbable', not 'improbably'. Also, I meant 'your' instead of 'you' in front of 'writing'. And I meant 'characters' rather than 'character'.
My, I made a lot of mistakes, didn't I?

Just saying.

Roonil (the same one)

Do you think you could tell me about other authors you've met? Have you met J. K. Rowling or Shannon Hale? Do you enjoy reading the works of other authors, or do you prefer to write your own? And(POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT) please, please, please tell me this: did Brutus ever marry Ethne? I must know! That was the only impending question I had at the end of Islands of the Blessed.

1/13/2011 03:04:48 am

My name is farah and I'm from pakistan. A week ago I picked up you novel "A house of scropians" and finished reading it. I loved your book so much but I have few questions. I checked the QA and my questions about the book were not on there. If you have time I would be very glad if you would tell me the answers :)

Q1 Why did Celia had to hide Matt in the small house in poppy feilds?
Q2 Did Celia hid the other clones of Matt there too?
Q3 Why did the whole family hate Matt so much for being a clone?
Q4 Was the story set in the future, if so what year?
Q5 Why did you name the book the house of scorpians?

Hey, i'm Madeline! In class we just finished The House of the Scorpin! I loved it! I was actually wondering if you could answer my question. Here it is... When Matt and Chacho were in the whalebones; where did you get the idea of having bats invovled in that scene? I was just wondering if you could answer! Big fan of this book! Bye! :)

Well I want to start of by saying you wrote an amazing book. I bought it from a book fair in 2004 when I was 14. I started to read and of course fell into the story and the book I speak of is the house of the scorpion. We moved soon after I bought the book, and 3 days ago, 7 years later at the age of 21, the book resurfaced when I was looking through my attic. I remembered pictures in my head from the details of the book. I started reading it and finished it ten minutes prior to writing this. I just had to search for you and say how wonderful of a story it was. I also saw there was mention of a sequel, if so I would love to read it. Ill continue to see if the sequel is released. Once again thank you for writting a book that left the first chapters inbeded in memory until 7 years later when I finally got to finish it

10/26/2011 10:03:45 am

Hi ms farmer i was wondering if you could put an approximate date on the book because i just finished the first and im craving for a second. So, yea thanks.
